Background of the Study
Communication is a fundamental skill in nursing practice, as nurses must interact with patients, families, colleagues, and other healthcare professionals on a daily basis. Effective communication is essential for delivering quality patient care, ensuring patient safety, and promoting collaborative teamwork. Public speaking, which involves speaking in front of an audience, is an essential component of communication training in many nursing programs. Public speaking skills can enhance a nurse’s ability to convey important information clearly, advocate for patients, and engage with diverse audiences, whether in clinical settings, community outreach, or educational environments (Roberts et al., 2024).
The University of Benin College of Health Sciences recognizes the importance of communication in nursing education and has incorporated public speaking training into its curriculum. Public speaking training offers nursing students opportunities to develop confidence in their communication abilities, refine their presentation skills, and practice conveying complex medical information in a clear and accessible manner. Research has shown that students who participate in public speaking training often experience improvements in verbal and non-verbal communication, increased confidence, and enhanced critical thinking (McKay & Olalekan, 2023).
Although public speaking is widely recognized as a valuable skill for nurses, its specific impact on nursing students’ communication skills remains underexplored in the context of Nigerian nursing programs. The University of Benin College of Health Sciences provides a unique setting to investigate how public speaking training influences nursing students' communication abilities, particularly in clinical practice and patient care.
This study will examine the impact of public speaking training on nursing students’ communication skills, focusing on improvements in their ability to communicate effectively with patients, healthcare teams, and other stakeholders.
Statement of the Problem
While communication is a crucial skill for nurses, there is limited research on the impact of public speaking training on nursing students' communication skills in Nigerian universities, particularly in the University of Benin College of Health Sciences. Public speaking training is often considered an extracurricular activity or an elective skill-building workshop, and its effects on nursing students' communication abilities are not well documented. Given the increasing emphasis on patient-centered care, effective communication is essential for nurses to provide high-quality care and build trust with patients and their families.
Without a solid foundation in communication, nursing students may struggle to convey critical information or participate in collaborative healthcare team discussions. The integration of public speaking into the nursing curriculum may offer an opportunity to improve students' communication skills, yet its impact remains unclear. This study seeks to investigate how public speaking training influences the communication skills of nursing students at the University of Benin, focusing on how it enhances their verbal communication, listening skills, and ability to express complex medical information clearly and confidently.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the impact of public speaking training on the communication skills of nursing students at the University of Benin College of Health Sciences.
2. To evaluate the improvements in verbal and non-verbal communication skills among nursing students following public speaking training.
3. To explore the relationship between public speaking training and the students’ confidence in their communication abilities.
Research Questions
1. How does public speaking training impact the communication skills of nursing students at the University of Benin College of Health Sciences?
2. What specific communication skills (verbal and non-verbal) are improved through public speaking training?
3. To what extent does public speaking training enhance nursing students' confidence in their communication abilities?
Research Hypotheses
1. Public speaking training significantly improves nursing students’ verbal communication skills at the University of Benin College of Health Sciences.
2. Public speaking training enhances nursing students’ non-verbal communication skills.
3. Nursing students who receive public speaking training demonstrate increased confidence in their communication abilities.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on nursing students at the University of Benin College of Health Sciences. Limitations include the reliance on self-reported data, which may be subject to biases, and the challenge of measuring the direct impact of public speaking training on clinical communication skills, which may require further longitudinal study.
